Samsung Electronics has revealed a new service integration with Tesla, set to be showcased at CES® 2024. This integration will link SmartThings Energy to various Tesla products, including Powerwall home batteries, Solar Inverters, Wall Connector charging solutions, and electric vehicles (EVs). Enabled by Tesla’s open APIs, the collaboration aims to expand SmartThings Energy’s connectivity, aligning with Samsung’s broader goal of delivering more convenient and seamless home experiences for consumers.
Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Development Team of Device Platform Center at Samsung Electronics, noted that Tesla Energy’s customers can now manage and monitor their home’s power status through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices, in addition to the Tesla app. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Samsung Electronics in extending its solutions beyond home appliances.
The primary consumer benefit of this collaboration is the ability of SmartThings Energy to connect with Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging, and EVs. Users can access information about their energy production, storage, and usage through SmartThings Energy.
Moreover, the collaboration allows consumers to better prepare for power disruptions and outages. SmartThings Energy can sync with the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function, providing alerts in the case of extreme weather events. Users can receive notifications through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TVs and mobile devices, activating AI Energy Mode before and during power outages to optimize the remaining backup energy stored in Tesla Powerwall.
Samsung’s use of the Tesla API aligns with its commitment to the Net Zero Home project, aiming to enhance the multi-device experience for SmartThings users. The collaboration will be showcased at CES® 2024, with the actual service in development and targeted to launch in the second quarter of 2024. It’s essential to note that the described features are subject to change. Drew Baglino from Tesla expressed excitement about adding capabilities to interact with other intelligent devices and software in customers’ homes, highlighting the early developer role chosen by Samsung in this endeavor.
