A notable feature in this update is the introduction of AirPlay hotel support, enabling iPhones to connect seamlessly with select hotel room TVs. According to the release notes for the iOS 17.3 Release Candidate, the AirPlay hotel support feature allows users to stream content directly to the TV in their room in participating hotels. This marks a significant enhancement in user experience, providing a convenient and wireless means of streaming videos, photos, and music from an iPhone to a compatible hotel room TV.
The process involves iPhone users scanning a QR code displayed on the supported hotel room TV, establishing a secure AirPlay connection. This innovative functionality aligns with the growing trend in the hospitality industry to offer guests seamless access to their preferred content. Notably, Google has already implemented a similar feature on certain hotel TVs, enabling guests to stream content from their smartphones via Chromecast.
In June 2023, Apple had previously disclosed that IHG Hotels & Resorts, the parent company of Holiday Inn, intended to adopt this feature. However, specific information about the availability of this feature within IHG Hotels & Resorts or other participating establishments remains undisclosed.
LG, a prominent player in the television manufacturing industry, has also joined the initiative, announcing its commitment to being among the first hotel room TV manufacturers to support the AirPlay hotel feature.
It’s worth noting that the launch of this feature was initially anticipated last year, as indicated by Apple. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the release was postponed until 2024. As the public eagerly awaits the iOS 17.3 update, the integration of AirPlay hotel support is poised to redefine the in-room entertainment experience for iPhone users.
