Uncertain Future Looms for Apple’s Vision Pro Ahead of Debut

by Celia

Apple’s highly anticipated mixed reality device, the Vision Pro, slated for debut in two weeks, is reportedly facing challenges that cast doubt on its future success.

A recent report highlighted major setbacks for the Vision Pro, with notable streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify expressing reluctance to launch visionOS software or allow their iPad apps to run on the new device. Furthermore, influential developers like Google and Meta appear poised to keep their distance from this Apple release, marking a departure from the usual developer enthusiasm seen with past Apple launches.

In contrast to previous Apple launches, where developers quickly embraced new products, the report suggests that the timing of the Vision Pro’s launch exacerbates the challenges. Many software developers are reportedly discontent with Apple’s recent policy allowing them to process payments outside their apps while still requiring a commission to be paid to the tech giant.

Last week, Spotify openly criticized Apple’s new payment policy, accusing the tech giant of protecting profits at the expense of developers and consumers, referring to Apple’s app store as a monopoly.

Independent developer Aaron Vegh voiced uncertainty about the Vision Pro’s success on his blog, expressing skepticism about its potential and even suggesting that failure might be beneficial.

Apple announced earlier this month that the Vision Pro, priced at $3,500, is set to hit stores on February 2. This move marks Apple’s entry into the mixed reality space, combining virtual and augmented reality. While Meta Platforms currently dominates this market, Apple aims to make a strong impression with its Vision Pro offering.

In preparation for the device’s release, Apple has unveiled new entertainment experiences, emphasizing that the Vision Pro will transform any space into the ultimate personal theater. The device integrates with the Apple TV app, enabling users to access series and films from Apple TV and Disney+, as well as sports content from ESPN, NBA, and Major League Baseball.
