All-in on EVs’: GM’s electric car plans hit a snag, as it reverts to plug-in hybrids

by Celia

General Motors, known for its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years, has announced a strategic shift back to plug-in hybrids, according to CEO Mary Barra. This move comes amid setbacks in the company’s electric car plans.

While GM had previously focused on all-electric vehicles, it continued to sell some plug-in hybrids in markets outside of North America. However, the automaker has now decided to reintroduce plug-in hybrids in North America, altering its previous trajectory towards full electrification.

The shift in strategy follows challenges in executing GM’s electric vehicle plans, despite high expectations surrounding the Chevy Bolt EV, the company’s first all-electric vehicle. Issues with production and delivery volumes have hindered the success of GM’s new Ultium EV platform, with the Bolt EV/EUV being the only models to achieve significant volumes thus far – albeit temporarily.

Recent months have seen GM announce delays in several key EV programs intended to ramp up production volumes. While Barra did not provide specific details on the new strategy, she mentioned that plug-in technology is already in use for specific programs in other markets, particularly China, suggesting that existing models may adopt plug-in options.

Critics view this shift as a step back for GM, considering plug-in hybrids as a transitional technology until battery electric vehicles (BEVs) become viable for all market segments – a milestone that some automakers, like Tesla, have already achieved profitably.

However, GM’s decision may be driven by the need to meet emission standards in North America, as BEV programs face delays. While the move to plug-in hybrids is pragmatic, there are concerns that it could further postpone GM’s BEV plans, potentially resulting in fines for non-compliance with emission regulations.

In light of these developments, stakeholders hope that GM will prioritize its BEV initiatives and avoid further delays, ensuring a smoother transition towards electrification in the automotive industry.
