Tesla has reintroduced transfers for its complimentary lifetime Supercharging offer, extending the incentive to owners who take delivery of a new vehicle within the next few months.
Owners with unlimited lifetime Supercharging privileges now have the opportunity to transfer this benefit to a new Model S, X, or Y if they take delivery by March 31, 2024. This update was brought to light by Sawyer Merritt on Saturday morning. Initially, early adopters of the Model S and X were granted the perk for the lifetime of their vehicles, with intermittent opportunities to transfer it to new models over the years.
Previously, Tesla had allowed transfers of the unlimited lifetime Supercharging perk last year, albeit exclusively for those receiving their Model S, X, or Y by December 31. Subsequently, the company reinstated the promotion with an extended timeline to 2024.
The option to transfer lifetime Supercharging benefits incentivizes owners to upgrade to newer models by enabling them to enjoy free Supercharger access with their new Tesla, rather than being tethered to their old vehicles to retain the perk. It’s important to note that this charging benefit does not apply to home charging, for which owners are billed at their electricity provider’s standard rate.
Additionally, Tesla introduced a one-time vehicle transfer option for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta software last year, extending a similar perk to customers who took delivery before September 30. Unlike the free Supercharging transfers, however, the FSD beta transfer option has only been made available once to date, though there have been calls for Tesla to reconsider offering this perk again in the future.
In 2017, Tesla implemented its first limitations on the free lifetime Supercharging offer, specifying that it could only be utilized for up to 400 kWh of Supercharger usage per year.
