The constant barrage of notifications from messaging apps and other sources can quickly become a nuisance, disrupting our focus and productivity. Android users are familiar with the struggle of managing these alerts while trying to stay engaged in other tasks. However, relief may be on the horizon with the upcoming release of Android 15, as the first developer beta introduces a promising solution to this persistent issue.
Previous iterations of Android, such as Android 14, have made strides in tackling notification overload with features like notification channels, which enable users to customize alert preferences for specific app functions. While effective for certain types of notifications, such as promotional alerts from shopping apps, these methods have often fallen short when dealing with incessant messages from chat apps.
Notably, Android expert Mishaal Rahman identified a potential remedy during the Android 14 QPR2 beta phase—a feature designed to automatically lower notification volume in response to a flurry of consecutive alerts from the same app. With the unveiling of Android 15’s first developer preview, Rahman has confirmed the inclusion of this feature, aptly named “Notification cooldown.”
Accessible through the main notifications settings page under Settings → Notifications → Notification cooldown, this functionality promises to offer respite from notification overload without the need for manual intervention. Although initial screenshots shared by Rahman lack a toggle switch or clear activation method, indications suggest that this feature will evolve in subsequent builds leading up to the public beta release.
Once widely implemented, Notification cooldown is poised to alleviate the burden of constant notifications, allowing users to remain undisturbed by incessant alerts without sacrificing awareness of important calls or messages. Nevertheless, even in the current stable version of Android, users have access to a range of notification controls to mitigate spam and minimize distractions.
As Android continues to evolve, enhancements like Notification cooldown reaffirm the platform’s commitment to improving user experience and fostering productivity in an increasingly connected digital landscape.
