Discount grocery giant Aldi has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly expand its presence in the United States, with the company announcing on Thursday its intention to open hundreds of new stores across the nation over the next five years.
Aldi has set its sights on adding a whopping 800 new stores by the conclusion of 2028, encompassing both newly constructed outlets and conversions of existing locations currently operating under different banners that Aldi has acquired. The grocery chain currently operates 2,300 stores nationwide.
The rationale behind Aldi’s expansion drive lies in its commitment to providing low-cost groceries to more communities across the country, particularly as consumers continue to seek ways to stretch their budgets amid persistently high grocery prices. Despite a recent moderation in inflation, food prices have remained notably elevated, with government data indicating a sharp 11.4% surge in 2022, followed by an additional 5% increase last year.
Aldi’s growth trajectory is fueled not only by organic expansion but also by its strategic acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket chains.
Aldi’s CEO, Jason Hart, underscored the company’s customer-centric approach, stating, “Our growth is fueled by our customers, and they are asking for more Aldi stores in their neighborhoods nationwide.”
The ambitious expansion initiative comes with a hefty price tag, as Aldi is poised to invest a total of $9 billion over the span of five years. The grocery chain plans to establish nearly 330 new stores across Northeastern and Midwestern states, while also venturing into new territories such as Southern California, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.
