Apple has reportedly resolved the persistent “ghost touch” bug affecting certain users of the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra models through the latest software update, now available for download.
The “ghost touch” problem, characterized by inadvertent taps and swipes registering on the device without physical contact, was initially reported in older models back in 2020. However, it resurfaced in Series 9 models in early February. The release notes for WatchOS 10.4 indicate that installing this update should rectify the issue “that causes some users to experience false touches on the display.”
In response to the problem, Apple issued a memorandum last month instructing Apple Service Providers to refrain from offering replacement watches while the issue was under investigation.
According to the memo, the false-touch issue may have led to erratic screen behavior, unintended phone calls, or difficulties entering device passcodes, significantly impacting the user experience with the latest models. The fix now rolling out is expected to alleviate these concerns.
While the full extent of the issue remains unclear, several discussions on Reddit suggest that it was relatively common among users. Some individuals even questioned the wisdom of purchasing the latest models due to this issue. However, others reported no such problems, even when using developer beta software.
Apple’s previous memo advised users to keep their smartwatches updated. Therefore, for those experiencing these issues, installing WatchOS 10.4 is not only recommended for addressing the “ghost touch” problem but also for overall system enhancements.
In addition to resolving the phantom touch issue, the update introduces a refreshed appearance for various apps, a new Smart Stack widget, and enhancements such as passcode requirements for ApplePay users with AssistiveTouch and fixes for contact-syncing issues.
Looking ahead, users can anticipate a more comprehensive operating system overhaul with the expected release of WatchOS 11 in September, likely coinciding with the launch of the Apple Watch 10 and the Apple iPhone 16.
